ATV/UTV VILAS COUNTY
As of January 28th, most ATV/UTV paved routes are now open year-round. Then there is the Vilas County ATV/UTV trail system that is not paved but could open May 1st? The opening of the dirt trails will depend on the weather and conditions of those trails. Come spring, there is so much that goes into opening and maintaining these trails that many do not realize.
The LANDOVER ATV/UTV CLUB maintains the trails, and it is not an easy task. The club members have to inspect, clear obstacles blocking the trails, trim low hanging limbs, and other foliage on the side of trails. The club also fixes, adds or replaces designated trail markers and signage before the trails can be opened. When the off-pavement trails do open, enjoy them but maintain safe speeds and always stay on designated trails.
For those who are new to the area or never rode on the Vilas County ATV/UTV trails/routes, you are missing out on incredible trails/routes and many sights. This trail system connects many towns, and you can head into the U.P. of Michigan from Land O Lakes. These trail/routes connects Land O Lakes, Conover, Phelps, Eagle River, Three Lakes, Presque Isle, Boulder Junction, St Germain and Arbor Vitae. You can also ride to Forest County.
When riding on paved routes (roads), drive/ride in the same direction as traffic and always stay to the right. If you are riding with others ATV/UTVs ride single file. Also, while on paved roads, stay on the pavement, follow the same traffic laws that apply. And the speed limit for ATV/UTVs is 35 mph. Also, those bright off-road lights (light bars) are not allowed to be used on paved roads and dim headlights for oncoming vehicles.
As I wrote above, MOST paved routes are open year-round, but there are some exceptions you should know. Lac Du Flambeau does not allow year-round travel. There are no routes that will take you to downtown Minocqua (the island). Then even though Boulder Junction is FINALLY allowing ATV/UTVs there are roads that are not open. #17, 32 45, 47, 51, 70 and (STH) 155 are NOT open. That being said, there are a few exceptions for (STH 17, 70 and 155) but those are properly signed.
If you are not sure on which route you can use, follow the posted signs. Roads that are LETTERED are LEGAL to use and the roads that are NUMBERED are ILLEGAL. If you do not have a trail map, they are always good to have as a backup. These trail maps can be found in many establishments with an honor system box for payment. Adding a few extra dollars to those boxes would not be frowned upon either. If you’re not a map person there is a Vilas County trail APP that will help you navigate the trails/routes.
Two other ways to support the LANDOVER ATV/UTV club. One, is to join this great club for only $30.
The second, is to purchase an EPIC CASH RAFFLE ticket. With only 150 tickets sold, there is a good chance you can win one of the three $6500 cash payouts. 1st prize is $5000, 2nd is $1000, and 3rd is $500.
